Interface are incredibly excited to celebrate (even within the current climate) the milestones of our 20th year in business, and certifying our 1000th FSC Certificate Holder – pushing us closer to being the market leader in FSC Certification in the UK! As a small UK-based employee-owned certification body, Interface-NRM are rivalling the larger multinational bodies, capitalising on our USP of picking up the phone and being as helpful and responsive as possible.
We spoke to those involved at Preston Board and Packaging Ltd who transferred certification to Interface and became our 1000th Forest Stewardship Council certificate holder following the successful transfer their sister company, Romiley Board Mill. You’ll be interested to hear why so many Certificate Holders are not just acquiring certification with Interface, but also keep transferring over to us too.
Charles Ingham had this to say:
“I am very impressed by the proactive approach taken by the whole of the Interface NRM team. Communication with our certification body is no longer the chore it was!”
Since 1981 Preston Board and Packaging have grown steadily to the point of manufacturing in excess of 20,000 tonnes of board per annum.
Operating two modern 2-meter-wide, 4 ply laminators, Preston Board have the ability to offer boards from 400um to 5000um. Paired with a suite of auxiliary equipment (die cutting, guillotining, rounding corners and punching holes) they can offer a diverse line of products from high-end, luxury packaging for graphical application to more industrial products such as transit sheets for the logistics industry and much more.
Romiley Board Mill became a part of the group in 1994, and now produce circa 55,000 tonnes of board per annum. This unique pairing of companies within the Preston Board group has allowed them to create a circular economy and reduce process waste down to zero.
It was this recognition of the social and economic import of making sustainable choices to protect the environment, paired with the market demands, that drove Preston Board to acquire FSC certification in 2011.
It was the proactive and responsive nature of Interface which drove Preston Board to choose us as their new certification body 10 years on from their FSC Main Assessment.
Our success is fuelled by our customer-centric approach, which has transformed us from a small business to one of the top players in our market in under 20 years! We strive to deliver an unbeatable customer experience that offers convenience and reliability, and our Trustpilot scores indicate we are achieving just that. We are dedicated to creating an effortless journey for all customers who trust us with their certification journeys for FSC, PEFC, ISO and Carbon Neutrality certification.
Quality and customer satisfaction are two of our top priorities. We strive to provide excellence to every client, working hard to ensure they are fully satisfied with the process and results. We not only listen to their requirements, but also take into consideration valuable feedback from them, allowing us to always go the extra mile for every customer. This has enabled us to reach and exceed our milestones – over 1000 FSC Certificate holders today!

Firstly thank you for providing this case study on FSC® and PEFC certification for Summers Joinery Ltd.
Founded in 1973, Summers Joinery Ltd has supplied high-quality joinery across the UK for over forty years.
Based at an industrial site in Coventry, the company has consistently grown over the years and, having expanded its factory and workshop space twice in the past decade, the company’s working site now covers some 14,000 square feet for craftsmen and joiners.
We want to obtain FSC and PEFC certification to allow us to be more sustainable and accommodate a wider variety of projects.
The knowledge of the whole team attracted us to use Interface NRM as our Certification Body.
Really helpful team and great service.
Both FSC and PEFC certification allows us to keep up with the ever-growing requirement for projects to be more environmentally conscious.
If you would like to find out more about the services we offer then please do get in touch. You can call us on 01952 288322 or you can also initiate a live chat directly from our website.

Firstly many thanks to Jason Mead for providing this case study on timber distribution and FSC® Certification.
Palmer Timber Limited are an importer/distributor of timber, based in the West Midlands.
We have always been a very forward-looking company and adopted the scheme in its very early days. We understood the importance of sustainability in our product chain. Being able to confidently demonstrate our commitment to that sustainability by supplying our customer base certified material meant it was something we had to be involved with.
Interface offered a one-stop solution for all of our certification needs. Firstly, their offices are not too far away if we require a face to face meeting. However, in truth, their communication has always been first-rate so this has never actually been required.
Outstanding. Any query we have regarding certification is answered immediately. Even now, after 25 years of being certified we still have questions that require clarification. Interface never fails to point us in the right direction.
With the increasing news coverage of environmental matters and a better understanding from our customers of the importance of ethically sourced material in our supply chain. I would argue that in 2022 we would not be able to operate without FSC certification, it is that important. Without FSC certification we would simply not be able to supply some of our biggest clients. It would catastrophically inhibit the growth of the company. So when you ask what are the benefits to our company, I would counter that with are there any benefits to NOT being certified?

Firstly many thanks to Chris Clarke for providing this case study on FSC certification in the packaging industry.
Established over 45 years ago, Springpack is a protective packaging and eco-friendly packaging supplier. Based in Worcester, we have seen rapid growth in recent years, and are now based in a purpose-built 53,000 sq.ft warehouse and office facility.
We now employ over 50 colleagues, covering Sales, Marketing, Warehousing & Facilities, Customer Service, Purchasing, and Accounts.
Here at Springpack, we are very conscious of our environmental impact. We wanted to ensure we aligned our product range accordingly.
By obtaining FSC Chain of Custody, we have greater control over the supplier we use for items. Also a better understanding of the journey the product has been on.
Initially the Interface price point was a key factor in choosing them. In addition to this, the level of service we received before, during, and after, has certainly made me realise it was the right choice!
Using Interface was really simple. From initial discussion through to pricing and also mapping out the relevant timelines for gaining the certification, everything ran smoothly. It really was straightforward.
In addition, we were even given a list of consultants to work with to help us gain the certification.
Put simply, it makes us stronger. We work with some internationally recognised brand names, and having such certification shows we practice what we preach.
We also hold a series of ISO certificates, and we are looking at further green initiatives and accreditations in 2022.

Firstly thank you to Cartonage for providing us with this case study, on your FSC® and PEFC certificate transfer from the packaging industry.
Cartonage is a British company that designs & manufactures cardboard folding cartons predominantly, but not exclusively, for the EU food industry.
Established in 1995 by an entrepreneurial constructional carton designer – Phil Webster, Cartonage remains a customer-focused privately owned business where all the key shareholders still remain actively involved in the business today, this includes Phil’s son & his daughter. Initially operating from a site in Leeds the business was relocated to Dewsbury in 2007 to a facility that was ‘purpose built’ to meet the exacting standards of modern carton design & manufacture.
Cartonage has an additional associate folding carton business – KOJ Packaging Ltd. KOJ Packaging is based in a new location 5 miles from the current Cartonage factory.
KOJ has been owned by directors Andrew Eastham & Alan Pounder since 2004. In 2008, they, together with Phil Webster, established the current Cartonage/KOJ business. KOJ is a smaller ‘mirror image’ of the main Cartonage manufacturing site in terms of plant & capability and forms a key part of the business risk management strategy in terms of contingency for continuity of supply.
The company is proud of its heritage & continues to forge long-standing relationships with a valued & broad customer base which includes UK food retailers.
It was a customer requirement/demand which initially drove us to obtain Certification. However, once we achieved certification and a better understanding of the ethics of sourcing & traceability we realised the benefits and also gained confidence in supply.
Their 5-star customer reviews on Trustpilot and also their competitive price.
Very good. Their approval of the logo use in particular is quick and easy. The feedback they provide on the usage is also very helpful.
Firstly it shows that we have good standards. Secondly, it allows us to appeal to customers who require certification.

I would of course recommend Interface if asked.

Firstly thank you to ABL Doors & Windows for providing us with this case study on your FSC® and PEFC certified windows and doors.
ABL doors were founded when Andy Williams, previously of the UK’s largest door slab manufacturer Premdor, spotted a frustration in the housing development market with the way that doors were sourced and fitted.
He noticed that the existing way the UK development market worked when it came to door hanging was slow, expensive, and inaccurate.
Taking inspiration from continental Europe and The USA, he decided to pursue the idea of precision-hanging doors in a factory setting. Simply installing a full, pre-hung doorset, consisting of frame, slab & furniture.
What drove you to obtain Certification?
Sustainability was our main driver for obtaining certification.
How have you found the process with Interface?
Excellent service as always
What benefits do you feel certification brings to your business?
Both FSC® and PEFC certification most importantly help us secure contracts with large housing developers. This is primarily due to an increase in the requirement of using sustainable products.
